Independent supplier Economy Energy has set out plans to treble its customer base and employ a further 200 staff over the next year, as it announced it had reached its 100,000th customer this week.

Economy Energy chief operating officer Angela Beardsmore said: “Signing up over 100,000 customers in just three years is a massive achievement and one that we are determined to build on.

“This year we will treble our customer base, create over 200 new employment opportunities and achieve a three-fold increase in revenues from £57 million to over £150 million.”

The supplier was set up in October 2012, and specialises in prepayment gas and electricity customers, with 97 per cent of its current customers on a prepayment meter.

Last month, Cornwall Energy released a report which showed a 15 per cent increase in independents’ market share, as they took 3.6 per cent from the big six in 2015.
