EDF reveals next stage of consultation on Sizewell C nuclear plant

EDF Energy has revealed the timetable for the second stage of a public consultation on the new Sizewell C nuclear plant it is proposing to build in Suffolk.

The consultation will begin on 23 November and conclude on 3 February next year. The big six supplier first announced it would proceed with the second phase of the process after its parent company made a final investment decision on Hinkley Point C in September.

The first stage of the consultation took place between November 2012 and February 2013. Following feedback from local residents, it has settled on a “preferred position” on some of the key elements of the proposals, although other parts “remain as options”. A third and final stage of consultation will take place before EDF Energy submits detailed proposals to the Planning Inspectorate.

Sizewell C project development director Jim Crawford said: “We have introduced this further stage of formal public consultation to give the public an opportunity to see how our plans have developed and to help us shape them further before a final stage of consultation.

“We understand it has been some time since we published our initial proposals for feedback, so I would like to encourage people to look through the latest plans for Sizewell C, to visit one of the exhibitions and to take the opportunity to have their say in the development of the project.”

If it goes ahead, the Sizewell C plant will feature two of the European Pressurised Reactors (EPR) which will also be used at Hinkley Point C. EDF Energy said it would be able to meet 7 per cent of the UK’s power requirements and provide 5,600 jobs during construction.
