Green Energy launches UK’s first green gas supply

Green Energy will be the first company in the UK energy market to supply only renewable green gas to its residential and business customers.

The independent supplier has committed to use 100 per cent renewable electricity and renewable green gas, moving on from its previous mixture of conventional natural gas and renewable green gas.

The supplier will use biomethane produced from anaerobic digestion plants using biodegradable food waste, sewage, energy crops and residues from food manufacture.

Green Energy UK chief executive Doug Stewart said: “Supplying 100% renewable gas and electricity has always been an ambition for Green Energy UK and I’m delighted that we are the first energy supplier in the UK to offer green gas to our existing and new customers.

“It is good news for our customers and green gas producers across the country.  We are also doing our bit for the environment by not relying on fossil fuels for our energy supplies.”

Biomethane-to-grid connections were the fastest growing market in the world for technology in 2015 and new connections brought the total number of installed gas-to-grid plants in the UK to 50, double the figure from 2014.
