Ecotricity is the only independent supplier to have made it into the top five energy suppliers for customer service in Citizens Advice’s latest complaints league, with six of the bottom eight being independents.
The consumer body’s quarterly complaints league has for the first time included the top 18 biggest energy firms rather than just the big six.
The best performing supplier was SSE with just 47 complaints per 100,000 customers, followed by fellow big six suppliers EDF with 64.3 per 100,000 in second. British Gas and Eon are in fourth and fifth place respectivelywith 82.8 and 88.8.
Green energy supplier Ecotricity was the best performing independent for customer service with a score of 70.2, placing it third. Fellow green brand Good Energy was the next highest placing independent with 91.2.
Extra Energy received the highest number of complaints amongst the independents with 769.5 per 100,000, with only big six supplier Scottish Power receiving more complaints overall at 944.3.
Scottish Power has routinely taken the bottom spot on customer service tables following the introduction of a new billing system last summer.
Citizens Advice said customers need “the whole picture” on how energy suppliers perform across both price and service so they can choose a supplier that meets their specific needs.
Citizens Advice’s chief executive Gillian Guy said: “We welcome the improvements some firms have made on complaints, but the worst performers still have a very long way to go. We urge the Competition and Markets Authority to use its ongoing review into the energy market to make sure all energy customers are getting the service they deserve.”
