Northern Powergrid reconnects 15,000 customers as Gertrude rages on

Northern Powergrid continues to battle high winds to reconnect an ever increasing number of customers as Storm Gertrude continues to batter the North of England and Scotland today.

The network company has reconnected 15,100 customers of the 17,000 customers who have lost power due to the storm since the early hours of this morning.

This is up from just 7,500 customers disconnected in Northumberland, Tyne and Wear and County Durham at 9am this morning.

Customers are primarily being cut off by trees and windborne debris being blown onto overhead powerlines. Northern Powergrid said the winds are also hampering ongoing efforts to reconnect customers, but the company is diverting electricity through alternative routes to reconnect customers as quickly as possible.

Northern Powergrid’s head of network operations Rod Gardner said: “Wherever weather conditions permit, we have our frontline engineers and linesmen working as quickly as possible to safely carry out repairs to the areas of our network which have been damaged as a result of Storm Gertrude.”

Scottish Hydro Electric Power Distribution (SHEPD) has 5,000 customers without power across its network in Scotland, where wind speeds have topped 100mph, down from 7,231 customers this morning.
