New figures from Energy UK have revealed the number of electricity customers switching away from the largest suppliers to small and mid-tier suppliers hit a record high in March.

The data showed the number of switches from larger to small and mid-tier suppliers was 206,419 last month, making up 43 per cent of all switches.

Meanwhile, just 11 per cent of switches were from small and mid-tier to larger suppliers.

In total, 476,528 customers switched electricity supplier, the highest recorded since November 2013. It was the third time in less than a year that the number of switches exceeded 400,000 three times.

The new data follows figures from Ofgem in February that showed switching was up 15 per cent in 2015, at its highest levels since 2011.

Energy UK chief executive Lawrence Slade said: “It’s fantastic to see customers taking advantage of the multitude of deals on offer. The substantial number of people shopping around and switching to new suppliers is proof of an active market.

“Not only are more people switching suppliers but the number of switches to small and mid-tier suppliers has hit an all-time high of 206,419, which is 43 per cent of all switches.”
