1,500 pumped hydro plants of storage needed, says Royal Society

The equivalent of 1,500 pumped hydro plants would be required to provide the minimum amount of storage needed to enable the UK’s transition to a wind and solar powered grid, the vice-president of the Royal Society has estimated. However, Sir Peter Bruce said that building the 1,500 pumped hydro plants is “not practical” given how big each one is, when giving evidence to the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee.
