Anglian Water has more than 300 fully electric and hybrid vehicles joining its fleet in the coming months.
This will include 60 hybrid-electric vans with onboard range extenders to overcome range anxiety, which emit 19g of carbon compared to around 317g by an average diesel engine van.
There will also be 43 fully-electric smaller vans and 200 electric cars as part of the company’s work to lower emissions from across the business.
Mick Farmer, head of fleet services at Anglian, said: “Traditional petrol and diesel engines produce a significant part of our carbon emissions every year – so going electric offers an exciting opportunity to build a sustainable future, while continuing to do what we do best.”
As part of Anglian’s routemap to net-zero carbon emissions the company plans to replace 90% of its small vehicles with electrified equivalents by 2030 as well as moving medium-sized vehicles towards hydrogen or alternative fuels. It also has plans to run 55% of its heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) on liquified natural gas by 2030.
The company said that by the end of the decade it would cut its operational carbon emissions by 70% against a 2018/19 baseline. This will represent a reduction of more than 250,000 tonnes.
As well as the new vehicles, the company has plans to install more than 120 charging points across sites, powered where possible by self-generated renewable energy.
