Anglian Water seeks to replace incumbent on 1500 Cambridge homes

Anglian Water will replace Cambridge Water as the supplier to a development of 1,500 homes in Cambridge, under plans Ofwat is consulting on.

The proposal, which is under consutlation. would grant Anglian Water a fourth “variation” to its appointment as a water and sewerage undertaker by allowing it to supply a site called Northstowe Phase 1 in Cambridge.

New appointments and variations include one company replacing another as the appointee for a specific geographic area.

Anglian Water will take a bulk supply of water from Cambridge Water and charge customers based on Cambridge Water’s existing water charges.

The regulator has said that Anglian Water will have to offer customers at least the equivalent levels of service to Cambridge Water.

Ofwat also states that by allowing Anglian Water to supply the new housing development, there may be a potential reduction on the bills of Cambridge Water’s existing customers of between 13p and 55p.

Anglian Water has previously been granted three variations to its appointment as a water and sewerage undertaker.

The first was in May 1997, when Anglian Water obtained a variation to its appointment to serve the Buxted Chicken site in Surrey.

The second variation to its appointment was in March 1998 at RAF Finningley in South Yorkshire, and the third was in July 2013 at Woods Meadow in Oulton.

The consultation period closes on 12 December.
