The big six energy suppliers must “wake up” as more challengers enter the market and close them down, says the founder of independent business supplier Yu Energy.
Yu Energy founder Bobby Kalar said: “They [the big six] need to wake up, they are not going to be around for very long.
“I think the big six will cease to exist. I think the vertical enterprise that they have, the wholesale and the retail business that they have, will be broken up to create a more level playing field.”
Kalar told Utility Week that consumers are “scared and brainwashed” by the big six suppliers into thinking that they are the most reliable.
He added: “We need to educate people out there that by using alternative, smaller suppliers you are sending a message to the big six who have up until very recently almost been lacksey-daisy about their attitude towards serving customers because they know that they control such a large market share that they don’t need to do anything more.
“It sends a message that says if you don’t look after your customers, we will.”
Kalar also claimed that the big six have fallen short of required standards but “nobody is there to challenge them”.
