Entrepreneurs have been invited to bid for a share of £2 million as part of a scheme to drive innovation in bioenergy.
Sustainably sourced bioenergy could meet 8-11 per cent of UK energy demand by 2020, the Department of Energy and Climate Change said, but more investment and research is needed.
The government’s £2 million scheme is designed to encourage innovation and research into wetland areas and bioenergy.
Many wetland areas in the UK are managed as habitats for wildlife, and material from these sites that currently goes to waste could be used to produce energy.
The initiative is split into three phases. Applicants initially bid for up to £50,000 to develop a prototype and start formal testing. After this, bidders produce a report that will be assessed by a panel of experts before the successful operations are able to bid for up to £1 million.
In the third phase, the panel will assess a final report and there will be an opportunity to bid for extra funds for further trials.
