The Mayor of London would back fracking in London if there are shale gas reserves in the capital.
In a letter seen by Utility Week, Boris Johnson said: “It is time for maximum boldness in energy supply.”
He added: “If reserves of shale can be exploited in London we should leave no stone unturned, or unfracked, in the cause of keeping the lights on.”
A spokesman for the Mayor’s office added that while it is not yet known if there are any shale reserves in the Weald Basin in the south of England – including areas of outer London – “he [Johnson] is adamant it would be madness not to investigate”.
However, Lawrence Carter, energy campaigner at Greenpeace, said fracking would add to the pollution levels already seen in London with “10 foot high toxic gas flares across London’s skyline.”
He added “the mayor has opened his mouth again before he knows what he’s talking about.”
