The country's first operational carbon capture and storage (CCS) project should be completed by 2016 at the latest, according to MPs.
A report from the Energy and Climate Change Committee (ECCC), examining low carbon links with China, said that CCS development needs to be accelerated to avoid the risk of the UK becoming a “runner-up” in low-carbon technology.
By demonstrating the capability to develop and deliver on low-carbon projects, such as CCS, the report said that the UK would begin to shed its “all talk and no action” image.
The MPs on the ECCC also said that the UK should align its funding with China to “invigorate” CCS and similar projects.
