British Gas has today announced at the GMB Congress in Plymouth that it is creating 200 apprenticeships.

The apprentices will graduate into jobs installing, servicing and repairing boilers and central heating systems after shadowing fully qualified engineers and studying at the British Gas academy.

A total of 36 of the 200 apprentices have already been recruited across Scotland, Birmingham, Leicester and Guildford and will begin their training this month.

Applications for the remaining 164 positions will open in the next month.

These positions are in addition to the 61 smart metering, 12 electrical services, and 209 service and repair apprentices currently being trained by British Gas.

Gary Smith, GMB national secretary for energy and utilities, said: “It is great news that amongst all the economic gloom and with unemployment amongst the young soaring that so many opportunities are being created.”
