British Gas has confirmed that it is taking legal action in order to obtain the details of a Barclays bank account holder in order to progress a £7,000 fraud investigation.
The story was posted this weekend by This is Money (see this link) citing “High Court documents” as the source. A British Gas spokeswoman said the firm could not comment further, but confirmed that the story, which states that over £7,000 in customer refunds was paid by the firm to a Barclay’s account holder, was accurate. “The important thing to stress is that customers have not been affected,” she said.
The firm would not comment on the extent of the security breach nor whether the case is an isolated incident.
Neither could British Gas provide any further detail on its ongoing investigation into allegations that 42 of its sales staff working in Sainsbury’s supermarket had been falsely claiming commission. See this link for details.
