Cadent chief executive Chris Train has announced he will retire from his role this summer.

Over the past six months, Cadent’s board has been searching for a successor. Chief financial officer Steve Hurrell will act as interim chief executive with immediate effect.

Train was appointed as Cadent chief executive in October 2016, when the company was still National Grid Gas Distribution.

Since then, he has navigated the company through a complex and challenging process of separating the business from National Grid and transitioning to a new ownership structure.

He has also led the development of Cadent’s strategy in preparation for the next regulatory price control.

Train, who has worked in the sector for 35 years, received an OBE in 2014 for services to the gas and electricity industry.

He is passionate about developing the skills of younger employees, and the value apprenticeships can bring to an organisation.

In a column for Utility Week last December, he wrote: “Cadent’s board has committed to recruit at least 50 every year (plus our other schemes, including graduates). So I am proud we are giving them an experience and start to their careers that they have judged to be first rate.

“We must ensure we maintain that drive and passion in an ever-changing world with many opportunities, and therefore lots of competition.”
