The prime minister has said the government supports plans for fracking wells to be developed across the entire country.
David Cameron denied that the coalition government wants fracking to be “confined” to certain parts of Britain.
Writing for the Daily Telegraph, Cameron said: “I want all parts of our nation to share in the benefits: north or south, Conservative or Labour.”
He added that shale gas has “real potential” to bring down electricity and gas prices because bills go down when domestic energy supply increases.
Public support will be forthcoming for shale gas, once its benefits are explained, and after reassurance has been given about the impact fracking has on the environment, added Cameron.
The benefits not only include potentially lower energy bills, but also community payments of £100,000 per exploratory well, and if gas is extracted 1 per cent of the revenue will be paid to local communities.
“We cannot afford to miss out on fracking”, he said.
