Carbon top of the agenda for Water Saving Week

As part of its sixth Water Saving Week, Waterwise is highlighting to the public the sheer amount of carbon needed to bring clean fresh water into homes.

The water efficiency campaign group is stressing that 2,266 kilotons of carbon is used each year in delivering water so encouraged householders to be mindful of the way they use the resource.

The group wanted to reach more people than ever before with its messages about the looming water shortage crisis caused by climate change, extreme weather conditions and population growth.

The week of online activity will highlight the links between water efficiency and the climate emergency with different messages each day to connect with as many people as possible.

Kate Marx, campaigns and social research manager at Waterwise told Utility Week the campaign would focus on the “whys” of water efficiency to give more people a compelling reason to change their behaviour.

These include looking at community water use, saving money, protecting wildlife habitats and gardening during droughts.

Across the water sector companies pledged to cut their carbon and achieve carbon neutrality by 2030 – well ahead of national government goals – as one of a series Public Interest Commitments coordinated by Water UK on behalf of the industry.

The industry has widely supported the messages of Waterwise in social media campaigns and messages to customers, many encouraging families in lockdown to learn about efficiency as part of home schooling.

Utility Week is calling for the sector to join together with a single message of how to lower per capita consumption (PCC) and supports the aims of Waterwise as part of our Mind the Tap series.
