Data institution mooted to manage smart meter information

A dedicated data institution should be set up to manage and distribute information derived from smart meters, according to the government-funded Energy Systems Catapult and the Data Communications Company. The two organisations claim that a dedicated entity should be set up to oversee the “governance of, access to and use of smart meter data for public good”. They claim this will “help to resolve the complex interaction between smart meter regulations and data legislation obligations”.

End of DNO incentives risks ‘sub-optimal’ customer service

A lack of financial incentives for distribution network operators (DNOs) to improve service risks creating a “postcode lottery” which could result in “sub-optimal customer outcomes”. That is according to Ofgem’s Stakeholder Engagement and Consumer Vulnerability (SECV) Incentives Panel, which has just published its final annual report. As the incentive scheme draws to a close, after eight years, the SECV Panel’s 2022-23 assessment warns that “stakeholder engagement is not truly embedded across all DNOs, and certainly not to the same standard”.

Transmission network charge hike labelled ‘catastrophic’

Doubling transmission network charges by the end of this decade would be “catastrophic” for Scotland’s renewable energy sector and will disincentive investment, the industry’s Scottish umbrella body has warned after projections reveal a dramatic increase. The Electricity Systems Operator (ESO) has announced its projection of Transmission Network Use of Service (TNUoS) tariffs for 2029/30 – 2033/34. These show that the total revenue expected to be recovered from demand tariffs is due to grow by about £3 billion from current levels to £6.1 billion in 2029/30.
