How to shut down a gas network

Any future government decision against the use of hydrogen for domestic heating could leave the necessity and viability of large parts of the gas grid in question. Yet, just three years out from the policy deadline on this critical point there has been no meaningful public debate about what a possible tilt towards electrification of heat would mean for the gas network. Utility Week speaks to experts about the issues such a scenario would raise and some of the potential solutions. One message is clear: the government, regulators and the industry need to start talking about this now.

‘Not a single person in supply chain’ thinks UK will hit net zero targets

Not a single person in the supply chain believes UK net zero targets will be achieved. That is the damning conclusion of the Energy Industries Council’s (EIC) annual Survive & Thrive report into global energy supply chains. Based on the views of 96 supply chain bosses, the EIC report concludes that “widespread delays in project funding strongly signposts that the UK is not going to meet its legally binding 2050 net zero target, and neither will Scotland meet its 2045 target”.

Strategic Innovation Fund projects awarded £95.3m

Ofgem has awarded £95.3 million to 10 projects for the final phase of the inaugural round of its Strategic Innovation Fund. More than a third of the money – £33.3 million – will go towards a project led by National Gas Transmission to establish whether existing gas compression units on the transmission network can be adapted to work with 100% hydrogen.
