Government could be set to invest more in small modular reactors as part of the green recovery plan. They could provide the natural successors to large nuclear reactors, supplying baseload in a future where intermittent energy will play an increasing part. But only if there is commitment to the necessary volume to deliver progressive cost reduction, say Julianne Antrobus and Robbie Lyons

It would be “odd” for the UK to dismiss new nuclear power, the energy minister has admitted, amid mounting speculation that small modular reactors (SMRs) will be one of the technologies receiving support when the long-delayed energy white paper is published.
It is “impossible to see” how new nuclear power stations will be developed in the UK until a framework for financing them is in place, National Infrastructure Sir John Armitt has warned.
A ban on the sale of internal combustion engine cars and gas boilers should be brought forward to as soon as 2030, the pioneering citizens assembly set up to help chart the UK’s route to net-zero emissions has recommended. The first report from the 110-strong Climate Assembly UK also expressed strong support for on and offshore wind generation and solar but was considerably cooler on nuclear and fossil fuels with CCS
In our latest review of sector coverage across the national newspapers, there is further backlash from energy networks over the regulator’s approach to the next price control. There is also a suggestion that more nuclear power plants could close early, as well as concern about the total cost of delivering a green grid. Meanwhile, Thames Water is under fire from a celebrity critic.
