Octopus launches flexibility scheme to prevent blackouts

Octopus Energy has launched a new scheme to enable its 1.4 million smart meters customers to earn money by reducing their electricity consumption to help avert the risk of blackouts this winter. The Saving Sessions scheme has been established to provide flexibility to the power grid as part of National Grid Electricity System Operator’s new demand flexibility service.

Minister confirms Energy Security Bill is under review

The government is reviewing the Energy Security Bill, recently-appointed climate minister Graham Stuart has confirmed to Utility Week. It is the first time the government has officially commented on speculation that the Bill, which enshrines key developments from the future system operator to heat network regulation, was being re-assessed. Stuart told Utility Week that despite the review he recognised the bill was full of "very important measures".

Grid exports for first time since 2010

The UK became a net exporter of electricity for the first time since 2010 in the second quarter of this year, according to new government statistics. A record high 4 TWh of electricity was exported between April and June on the back of a boom in renewable generation.
