Duty to upgrade sewage treatments should be expanded

All wastewater treatment works serving a population of 250 or more should be upgraded before the end of the decade, according to a House of Lords committee. Facilities which serve below 2,000 people are currently exempt from legal obligations to improve wastewater treatments works by 2030. However, the House of Lords Built Environment Committee claims that the current exemption is having a negative effect on housing schemes in villages and smaller communities.

Ministers delay decision on UK’s biggest solar farm

The government has delayed a planning decision on proposals for the UK’s biggest solar farm. Under the statutory process for national infrastructure projects, ministers were due to make a decision on the development consent order (DCO) for the Sunnica Energy Farm by28 September 28, three months after receiving a report from inspectors. However, junior energy minister Lord Callanan issued a written statement that confirmed a decision on the DCO is being postponed.

Lords block ‘unconservative’ bid to relax water pollution rules

The House of Lords has blocked the government’s attempts to relax rules around the pollution of waterways. In a fiery debate on the proposed amendment to the Energy Bill, former Climate Change Committee chair Lord Deben labelled the move as “entirely unconservative” and added that it was “one of the worst pieces of legislation” he has ever seen. The proposed amendment on scrapping nutrient neutrality measures was introduced by Levelling Up secretary Michael Gove last month. He claimed it would free up developers to build thousands of homes.
