Centrica chairman Sir Roger Carr today railed against a proposed European law that would force large companies to have minimum numbers of women on their boards of directors after the legislation's progress was stalled by strong opposition in the European Parliament yesterday.
Writing in the Times as chairman of business leaders association the CBI, Sir Roger said: “British businesses have one message for Brussels on this – we don’t need the law to make us do something we want to do by choice. Most businesses genuinely buy into the benefits of increasing diversity and believe that mixed-sex boards make for better decision-making.”
The proposed law championed by EU justice minister Viviane Reding, would oblige major companies to give at least 40 per cent of their board positions to women. Reding said she would not give up.
