China interested in UK-Ireland interconnector

China's state grid operator is among the firms planning to build a 5GW interconnector beween the UK and Ireland. The consortium today signed an agreement to start investigating the feasibility of financing and building the link.

Transmission system operators National Grid and its Portuguese counterpart REN (Redes Energéticas Nacionais) will work with the State Grid Company of China as well as renewables developer, Mainstream Renewable Power to determine how it could be built, financed, owned and operated.

If the project looks feasible, the aim is to complete the first 1.2GW phase by 2017.

Mainstream boss Eddie O’Connor is one of the strongest advocates of the so-called ‘supergrid’.
