MPs heard today that any consumer wishing to opt out of having a smart meter installed could be charged.

Giving evidence to the Energy and Climate Change Select Committee ScottishPower’s operations director Andrew Ward said charging for meter reading and billing was an option that had reduced refusal rates in the US from 8 per cent to 1.5 per cent. Asked whether this was an approach he preferred Ward said: “We are nowhere near that point yet.”

UK suppliers are expected under the smart meter roll out plan to achieve 97.5 per cent uptake of smart metering.
