New Balancing Reserve service to be fully open to smaller units

The Electricity System Operator (ESO) has reversed a decision that would have effectively ensured that a substantial portion of contracts for its proposed new Balancing Reserve service would be awarded to large gas plants. The body said its new position will fully open the market a wider pool of providers, including smaller and aggregated units.

Government refuses to raise carbon capture power targets

The government has resisted pressure to step up the pace of targets for rolling out carbon capture power plants. The UK has already set a target that as much as 10GW of power plants fitted with CCUS (carbon capture, use and storage) technology could be required by 2035 in order to meet emissions target reductions for the sixth carbon budget, which covers 2033 to 2037. A response to a consultation on a proposed future policy framework for delivering power CCUS, which concluded in October last year, says a number of respondents suggested this level would be the minimum needed.

£20m pipeline to boost water security in Essex

A water transfer project to move 50 megalitres of water between treatment sites in Essex has begun work to bolster resilience of supplies in the region. Raw supplies will be able to move from a reservoir to both treatment plants to better exploit treatment capacity. Essex and Suffolk is investing £20million in the scheme, which will serve 370,000 customers.
