Coronavirus outbreak shuts down concrete factory supplying Hinkley

A factory which supplies concrete segments to the Hinkley Point C nuclear site has been forced to close and undergo a deep clean due to a coronavirus outbreak among workers.

A total of 28 employees at the Avonmouth facility owned by Balfour Beatty have tested positive for the virus as of today (28 July).

Balfour Beatty said it has been able to keep its operational up until now by implementing new working practices to comply the government’s social distancing guidelines.

A statement from the company said it has initiated the NHS’ test and trace procedure in response to the outbreak.

It added: “Having engaged with Public Health England and Bristol City Council, we have now taken the responsible decision to close the facility until further notice to reduce the potential further spread of Covid-19.

“The NHS’ Test and Trace procedure has so far shown no impact on the Hinkley Point C main construction site, which the Avonmouth facility serves as part of the wider supply chain.

“We continue to engage with all those affected and remain committed to the health, safety and wellbeing of all those who work with and for us, as well as the general public.”
