The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is expected to further extend Jonson Cox’s tenure as chair of Ofwat, a position that was due to come to an end this month.

Cox, who was appointed non-executive chair in 2012, had his tenure extended in November 2019 until October 2021.

Cox’s successor will be appointed by the Secretary of State for Environment George Eustice however Utility Week understands the process has not yet formally begun.

Defra said the campaign for a new Ofwat chair will be launched this autumn.

It is thought that Cox will be asked to stay for a further six months at the regulator.

Following the departure of chief executive Rachel Fletcher in April, David Black has held the top role in an interim capacity awaiting a replacement chair to recruit a permanent chief executive.

His appointment as interim was for 12 months to provide stability to the sector during the transition until the new chair was named.

Having previously worked at Yorkshire Water, Cox was appointed to the position at Ofwat to resolve issues between water companies, investors and the regulator.
