Plans to simplify the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) energy efficiency scheme, including the scrapping of the league table, have been laid before Parliament today.
The CRC order put forward by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (Decc) will simplify the scheme and deliver a 55 per cent reduction in costs, worth around £272 million to participating businesses and organisations.
The reforms include a government review of the scheme in 2016, withdrawing all state-funded schools in England from the scheme, and reducing the overlap with other climate change legislation.
The number of fuels participants have to report against will be reduced from 29 to 2 (electricity and gas for heating), while the 90 per cent and Climate Change Agreement exemption rules will be removed.
The measures, which were set out last year in the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement, will come into force on 15 May 2013.
