Cuadrilla is seeking to expand it shale exploration work with up to six new wells in Lancashire.
The company said it is intending to apply planning consent to drill, hydraulically fracture (fracking), and test the gas flow at six temporary sites in the Fylde.
Cuadrilla also intends to apply for planning consent to frack and test the shale at its existing exploration well in grange Hill.
In addition to these, it will also apply for planning permission for an additional three vertical exploration wells, which will not be fracked, to allow for additional rock samples to be taken.
The consultancy firm Arup has been appointed to undertake all the environmental impact assessments for all of the planning applications.
Francis Egan, chief executive at Cuadrilla, said they remain at the exploration phase at the moment, but the gas resource in Lancashire is on an “exciting scale”.
He added: “The purpose of all our ongoing exploratory work is to demonstrate that natural gas can be produced from the shale in commercial quantities.”
