David Cameron has defended the government's decision not to add a decarbonisation target to the Energy Bill at prime minister's questions today.
Responding to Labour back bencher Chi Onwurah, he told MPs that setting a target in 2014 is not a priority for business.
The prime minister also said that “it doesn’t make sense” to set a decarbonisation before the fifth carbon budget is set, and “before we know if carbon capture and storage works or not.”
He added the government is providing certainty for industry and investors by introducing a levy control framework of more than £7 billion and by continuing the renewable obligation support for 20 years.
This comes the day after a cross-party amendment, tabled by Energy and Climate Change Committee chair Tim Yeo and Labour’s Barry Gardiner, was voted down by 290 votes to 267.
