The Department of Energy and Climate Change spent £8.3 million on consultancy from the "big four" last year, more than double the sum in any previous year. Energy minister Greg Barker revealed the increase in response to a written question from Labour MP Barry Sheermand.

KPMG garnered the biggest share of work in 2012/13, with £3.0 million. Deloitte followed on £2.5 million; Pricewaterhouse Coopers on £1.5 million and Ernst and Young on £1.3 million.

Since Decc launched in October 2008, the total has ranged between £1.5 million (2010/11) and £4.0 million (2011/12).
