Decc statistics show rising awareness of shale gas

Awareness of shale gas has risen sharply in the past 18 months, the latest figures from the Department of Energy and Climate Change show.

More than half of people (52 per cent) have heard of shale gas, up from 32 per cent in July 2012, the government’s public attitudes tracker survey found.

Support for shale gas fracking ran slightly higher, at 27 per cent, than opposition at 21 per cent. Some 48 per cent expressed no opinion.

People who own their homes are “significantly more likely” to know about and support shale gas extraction than social housing tenants, Decc said.

The survey also showed rising awareness of renewable heat, with 78 per cent of respondents knowing something about the sector.
