RWE Npower has denied claims made last week by ratings agency Moody’s that the energy company plans to close coal-fired plant at its Didcot A site next March.

The company has told National Grid that from March 2013 it will not need Didcot’s transmission allocation under its Transmission Entry Capacity registration, but maintains that it could reverse that move should the market change.

Didcot A manager Jim Haggan said the move “simply reflects current market conditions and a requirement to reduce costs. We are keeping all future options for the site open”. The plant has less than 6,400 running hours under the EU’s Large Combustion Plant Directive.
