Dong Energy starts prep work for Walney Extension

Dong Energy has started preparatory work for its 660MW Walney Extension offshore windfarm with the construction of the onshore substation.

The onshore substation is “one of the most important features of the windfarm” and will feed generated electricity to the national grid. The next stage of onshore construction will be onshore cable installation and is expected to start in early 2016.

Dong Energy’s deputy construction manager for the onshore substation John Agnew said: “This is a really exciting moment in the project.

“We are committed to working with local subcontractors and supply chains to ensure we are investing in the community, both in the construction stages of the project and throughout its entire lifetime.”

The Walney Extension will be situated next to the existing 367.2MW Walney offshore windfarm located 19 kilometres off the Cumbrian coast.

The extension will generate enough electricity to power around 460,000 homes and was granted consent by the energy secretary in November 2014. Dong Energy expects to take a final investment decision on the project later this year.
