Drinking water quality reaches ‘new high’ in Scotland

A total of 99.91 per cent of drinking water samples in 2013 met quality standards, according to Scottish Water’s annual report.

The company also announced that average household charges are £54 lower than the average bill in England and Wales.

Scottish Water, which delivered £475 million of regulatory capital investment in 2013/14, says prices will rise by less than inflation during this period.

The water company also said it had posted a record improvement in customer service and environmental performance.

Douglas Millican, chief executive of Scottish Water, said: “We have been working hard to protect and enhance Scotland’s natural environment – achieving our best ever performance in 2013/14, which supported full bathing water compliance.”

Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s deputy first minister said Scottish Water’s results “clearly illustrated the ability of the public sector to deliver excellence and to support economic growth”.

“At an average household charge that is £54 lower than in England and Wales, Scottish Water is providing one of the best value for money water and sewerage services,” she said.
