Ecotricity hits 150,000 customer mark

Independent ‘green’ energy supplier Ecotricity has reached 150,000 customers up from 85,000 at the end of 2013.

Ecotricity, which only supplies energy from renewable sources, said it believes it is benefitting from poor customer satisfaction levels in the energy industry and faster switching times, leading to 2 million customers switching away from the big 6 over the last 12 months.

Ecotricity topped the 2014 Which? energy customer satisfaction survey and received the lowest number of complaints in the energy industry last year, with only 0.86 complaints per 1000 customers compared to SSE which received the lowest score amongst the big six with 20.81.

Ecotricity said it has the longest period of price stability in the industry having frozen its prices over the last two years as it generates 40 per cent of its own energy and is unaffected by fluctuations in the price of wholesale energy from fossil fuels.

Ecotricity founder, Dale Vince said: “It’s been another watershed year for the industry, 2014 was a year when millions of people simply said enough is enough and looked for an alternative to the big six.

“What brings so many people to Ecotricity is quite straightforward: we have the greenest energy supply in Britain, the best customer service of any energy company, and an ethical pricing policy that means every customer gets our latest best price, regardless of how they pay or when they joined us.”

As of September 2014 independent energy suppliers held 8 per cent of the market share for the first time, with First Utility being the first independent supplier to pass the 1 million customer mark.
