Ecotricity tariff offers 1,000 free car miles

Independent energy supplier Ecotricity has launched a new tariff that offers drivers of electric cars 1,000 free miles per year.

The Green Electricity + Car tariff will take £40 off the annual bill, the cost of charging up a car at home with enough power to travel 1,000 miles, as well as providing electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid owners access to the Ecotricity’s “Electric highway” – a national network of fast chargers.

Dale Vince, founder of Ecotricity, said: “To get the greatest environmental benefit from an electric car, it needs to be charged using 100 per cent green electricity from the wind and the sun – otherwise you’re still powering it from dirty fossil fuels.”

The new tariff comes as the supplier signed a partnership with the Volkswagen Group to become the German car company’s official green energy supplier.

This means customers purchasing electric vehicles from of the group’s brands – Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, and Skoda – will be offered the Ecotricity tariff and a free smart meter installation.

The deal comes as Volkswagen is about to bring its first electric car – the e-up! city car – to the British market.
