“Elevated levels of radioactivity” have been detected at the Sellafield nuclear reprocessing plant in Cumbria.
The site is running at “reduced manning levels” following the detection of raised radioactivity levels at one of the on-site radiation monitors at the north end of the site.
Only “essential workers” have been asked to report for work today, although the site is said to be “at normal status” and it is continuing to operate as investigation continue.
A statement from Sellafield said: “Levels of radioactivity detected are above naturally occurring radiation but well below that which would call for any actions to be taken by the workforce on or off the site.”
It added: “All our facilities have positively confirmed there are no abnormal conditions and are operating normally.”
A Department of Energy and Climate Change spokesperson said: “We are in constant contact with Sellafield.
“There is no risk to the public or workforce and the site is still open.”
