Energy efficiency schemes need a 'face-lift' to boost take-up, according to Consumer Focus Scotland.
The watchdog claims more needs to done to boost up take because while 1 in 3 homes are in fuel poverty, only 1 in ten have applied to government schemes.
Research by Consumer Focus Scotland reveals householders are being put off applying for the measures because of eligibility worries, concerns about strangers entering their homes, taking time off work, and uncertainty about the condition of their home once the work has been completed.
Showing home owners examples of finished work, providing the option of evening or weekend installations, and establishing a new quality standard and guarantees over materials and workmanship have been recommended to reassure householders.
The Scottish government and councils have also been advised to provide clearer eligibility information, and to involve more trusted organisations to help ensure vulnerable consumers do not miss out.
Trisha McAuley, senior director at Consumer Focus Scotland said: “It is vital that councils and government address people’s concerns as a priority and get help to many more households, particularly those in vulnerable situations.”
