Energy switching up 15 per cent in 2015

The number of customers switching energy supplier has reached its highest level since 2011, Ofgem's latest figures show.

According to the data releasaed today, 6.1 million switches occured in 2015, a 15 per cent increase or 820,421 more than 2014.

The data was collected by Ofgem as part of its public information campaign, ‘Be An Energy Shopper’ which also revealed that over 40 per cent of the switches were to independent suppliers, rather than the big six.

Ofgem senior partner Rachel Fletcher said: “It’s encouraging to see switching levels at their highest level for four years. With more than 30 suppliers active in the energy market and hundreds of pounds of savings to be made, it’s a great opportunity to shop around.”

Ofgem has been advising consumers to look for a better deal on their energy bills through its campaign, claiming they could save around £200 a year by switching.
