Audrey Gallacher will become Energy UK’s interim chief executive when incumbent Lawrence Slade steps down later this month.
Gallacher is the trade body’s current director of policy and is also responsible for the teams working on regulation, operations and the smart meter programme.
She has an extensive background in the energy sector, initially with Ofgem as head of consumer affairs in Scotland.
More recently, she has held director of energy positions with the statutory watchdog, Consumer Futures and at Citizen’s Advice.
Slade, whose departure was announced in August, joined the industry body in 2011 and became its chief executive in January 2015.
He has been involved in the energy industry since the late 1990s, working around the world.
Announcing the news Energy UK chair Lord Hutton said: “At such a crucial time for the sector and with so many important developments expected over the next few months, we know we cannot afford to stand still as an organisation.
“Having Audrey in place, means it will still be business as usual for Energy UK as we prepare for a busy period which could include a new government, a white paper, continuing challenges for the retail sector and of course, the drive to meet the net-zero target. Our sector will play an integral role in this transformation and the work needs to start now.
“Audrey is well known to both Energy UK staff and our members and I know she will do a great job driving the organisation forward over the next few crucial months.”
Energy UK said an announcement on the permanent chief executive position will be made in due course.
