The Environment Agency (EA) has given a preliminary green light for the proposed Hinkley Point C nuclear power station in Somerset. The agency issued three draft decisions yesterday which are now open to public consultation.

EDF and Centrica’s joint venture, NNB Generation Company Limited, applied for three permits in July 2011, which would allow it to discharge and dispose of radioactive water; discharge cooling water and liquid effluent into the Bristol Channel; and to operate standby power supply systems using diesel generators.

The EA considers that these permits could be issued subject to limits and conditions to ensure people and the environment are properly protected. That decision is now subject to a 13 week public consultation which concludes on 9 November.
