ENW earmarks substations for summer makeover

Electricity North West (ENW) has earmarked ten substations in Greater Manchester for a summer makeover as part of its Transforming our Spaces campaign.

The programme, which began in 2019, sees the company revamp areas of land around electricity substations that have suffered vandalism, lack wildlife or do not have funding to carry out such projects.

The distribution network operator will undertake makeovers at substations in Salford, Levenshulme, Urmston, Stretford, Mossley, Hindley, Astley and Leigh, where workers will plant flowers and herbs and install planters, bird feeders and bug hotels. They have already commenced work to clear the sites and the flowers are expected to bloom in late summer.

This year, the company will also identify a further ten sites to makeover in the autumn.

Ryan Wilson, who leading the scheme for ENW, said: “Substations aren’t always aesthetically pleasing but they’re critical parts of the network.

“We regularly maintain all of our sites which involves weeding and cleaning, but Transforming our Spaces takes everything to the next level.

“I’m over the moon we’re carrying out 20 projects throughout the year. The feedback from local communities has been brilliant and that’s led to us expanding the scheme to continue revamping land around substations in the region.”

ENW has already transformed 31 substations throughout its region in previous years.
