Eon has scrapped plans for a 48MW windfarm project in Durham due to "objections".
The company said a review into a number of long-standing environmental and technical issues, including objection from the Ministry of Defence, has resulted in its withdrawal from the Isles windfarm project near Newton Aycliffe.
The site has faced a number of objections since it was submitted to Durham County Council in 2013.
Eon originally planned to build 45 turbines at the site, with a combined capacity of 115MW. However, following public consultation, this number was reduced to 24 turbines, with a capacity of 48MW.
In addition to resistance from the Ministry of Defence, high level of bird activity, investor uncertainty and changes to Planning Law have made the project unviable.
In a statement, Eon said: “Eon continues to invest in onshore wind and believes it has an important role to play in meeting the UK’s renewable targets.”
The company has a portfolio of 14 onshore wind projects in development stages and 16 operational sites in the UK.
