Eon urges tenants to install smart meters by end of June

Eon is urging 1,000 housing association tenants it supplies to take up the offer of free smart meters by the end of June.

The large supplier alongside Trent & Dove Housing Association has written directly to tenants about the offer and is also offering a smart pay as you go option which enables customers to view their balance and top up at any time.

Eon’s director of smart metering Graham Line said: “We’ve been writing to tenants who are our customers for a number of weeks now, offering smart meters and Smart Pay As You Go and explaining the benefits.

“We’ve seen a good deal of interest so far and just want to remind people to contact us on the number on their letter by the end of June to ensure they don’t miss out.”

On smart pay as you go tenants will be able to choose from any of Eon’s available tariffs and pay the same prices as direct debit customers.

The full smart meter rollout requires suppliers to offer every energy customer a smart meter by 2020 and begins full-scale this summer. At Utility Week Live earlier this month, Eon’s Smart Energy Hub UK head Dr Jon Kirby called the targets “scary” and said that meeting them would be a “heroic” act.
