A new regime has come into force for gas shippers and gas distribution network operators that want to take gas from the UK's high-pressure National Transmission System (NTS) operated by National Grid.
The new scheme, known as enduring exit capacity arrangements, went live on Monday and replaced the idea of firm and interruptible NTS sites.
Shippers and network firms can now either buy an enduring right to the capacity they need, buy it one year at a time, or bid in day-ahead and within-day auctions.
The new non-discriminatory regime has involved a lengthy process of reform, begun when National Grid sold four of its distribution networks in 2005. The process was delayed when Eon successfully mounted a Competition Commission challenge.
