Fire crews are working to extinguish a blaze at Npower's Tilbury power station. The company confirmed that a fire had been reported in the biomass plant's pellet store at 7.45am this morning.

A spokesperson said it was too early to assess the state of the damage but that all staff were accounted for and that nobody had been hurt. She added that the company was working with the fire service and would issue status updates on the blaze throughout the day.

Around 100 fire fighters were on site this morning. By afternoon Npower said they were beginning to extinguish the fire with foam. The company said firefighting efforts had been made “chellenging” by the fire’s location, high up in the pellet store’s main structure.
