A fire broke out in Whitstable, Kent on Friday evening after a team of engineers from SGN were called to repair a damaged gas main.
Engineers were called to a medium pressure main in Estuary Business Park to repair damage caused by a third party.
According to reports one of the engineers suffered burns to his face and legs and was taken to William Harvey Hospital in Ashford, while another man was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
Images posted on twitter showed huge flames coming from the gas mains.
Kent Fire and Rescue said SGN had isolated the gas main shortly before 3am and put the blaze out.
A spokesman said: “It is not known what caused the explosion at this stage.”
SGN said: “It is too early to know what caused the fire but an investigation is under way. We would like to reassure the local community that we are continuing to closely monitor the situation to ensure their safety.”
